The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), inside the knee joint, is one of the ligaments most often injured in sport, commonly from a sudden stop, a change of direction, or a jump landing. A torn ACL does not heal on its own, so surgical reconstruction is generally considered for patients who wish to return to sport or whose knee remains unstable in daily activity.

About the procedure

Reconstruction is performed arthroscopically, using the patient's own tendon tissue to rebuild the ligament, an approach intended to keep the surgical wound small and support recovery. Rehabilitation follows a staged programme after surgery, working toward a return to daily activity and, where relevant, sport, with the pace adjusted to each patient's condition and goals.
Please talk to us if you have experienced a knee injury during sport, or have ongoing instability or discomfort in the knee.
