Alongside general internal medicine for everyday community needs, we have specialists in respiratory medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology, and hematology on staff, so more specialised conditions are also within reach. Please talk to us if a symptom is concerning you. We also provide guidance on diet and lifestyle change to help treat and prevent a range of internal medicine conditions, and we coordinate closely with other departments, and with home care, for older patients managing several conditions at once.

What we treat

Respiratory medicine

We treat respiratory conditions generally, including pneumonia, bronchial asthma, COPD, and interstitial pneumonia. For lung cancer, we refer to an appropriate institution depending on the case. For sleep apnoea, we can manage the full course from inpatient assessment through treatment and follow-up. Please talk to us about a cough, phlegm, wheeze, breathlessness, or pauses in breathing during sleep.

Cardiology

We investigate (blood tests, ECG, X-ray, CT, cardiac ultrasound, 24-hour ECG, exercise testing) and treat heart conditions generally, including breathlessness or chest pain on exertion and palpitations. We follow up chronic conditions such as ischemic heart disease, arrhythmia, valve disease, and cardiomyopathy, and work to identify early signs of a time-critical cardiac event and connect patients with a higher-level partner institution when needed. We also treat lifestyle-related conditions such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, assessed with ABI and carotid ultrasound among other tests.

Gastroenterology

We investigate and treat stomach pain and discomfort, bowel irregularities such as diarrhoea or constipation, abdominal pain generally, Helicobacter pylori-related gastritis, ulcerative colitis, and conditions of the biliary tract and pancreas. Beyond upper and lower endoscopy under general anaesthesia, a specialist in the hepatobiliary and pancreatic field performs ERCP to support early detection and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers.

Hematology

We treat common blood-related conditions. We are not currently accepting new chemotherapy patients, but we do follow up patients whose treatment has stabilised, provide transfusion care for patients who find it difficult to travel to a distant hospital, and perform phlebotomy for patients with polycythemia.

Rheumatology

For unexplained, persistent joint pain or fever, we investigate with blood tests, X-ray, and joint ultrasound among other tests. We do not admit patients for inpatient treatment, but we treat rheumatoid arthritis in particular, and can refer to a higher-level institution if needed.

Thyroid clinic

Our thyroid clinic addresses (1) thyroid swelling and (2) thyroid hormone abnormalities. A thyroid specialist treats Hashimoto's disease, Graves' disease, and thyroid hormone abnormalities around fertility treatment and pregnancy. For thyroid tumours, we perform thyroid ultrasound and refer to a partner institution if an invasive test is judged necessary. Please talk to us if you notice swelling at the front of your neck, or symptoms such as unusual fatigue, marked weight change, palpitations, or hand tremor.

Diabetes clinic

Many patients delay seeing us out of a sense that diabetes means strict dietary restriction, or a belief that it results from poor lifestyle choices. Our diabetes specialists work with each patient to find a practical way of living well alongside diabetes, taking each person's circumstances seriously and coordinating with our dietitians, pharmacists, dermatology, and ophthalmology to propose a suitable course of treatment. Blood test results, including blood glucose and HbA1c, are available on the day of your visit, so the effect of treatment can be tracked quickly. Because early treatment, through diet, exercise, and medication, matters a great deal, we encourage you to talk to us early about finding an approach to managing blood glucose that you can keep up over time.
