Epidural Childbirth

We offer epidural pain relief in childbirth to patients who wish for it. Our obstetrics service, built on many years of experience, is known for safe delivery under experienced physicians and attentive nursing care; some families have delivered here across three generations.

We invest in care before and after delivery too, through parenting classes and prenatal health guidance, supporting a setting where patients can feel at ease through birth. Every pre-delivery room is private, so you can approach delivery without concern for those around you.

What epidural birth involves

Epidural birth uses anaesthetic medication to ease the pain of labour. This hospital provides epidural pain relief, in which a thin tube is placed in the epidural space of the back to deliver anaesthetic. You remain fully conscious; only pain in the lower body is relieved, and the approach can be sustained even if labour runs long.

We have offered epidural pain relief in childbirth since 1972, giving us a long history and considerable experience. We meet every item in the self-assessment checklist under the national recommendations on building a safe framework for epidural childbirth.

Our approach

1. Available around the clock, every day of the year

We provide epidural birth regardless of the day of the week, holidays, or time of night, at no additional cost.

2. You can switch to an epidural mid-labour

If you begin labour without anaesthesia and find it becomes too difficult, switching to an epidural partway through is possible, depending on how labour is progressing.

3. Anaesthesia can be sustained through to delivery

Earlier intermittent dosing meant anaesthesia could wear off during labour; we now use continuous epidural anaesthesia, so relief can be sustained through to delivery.

4. Both spontaneous and planned delivery are supported

We accommodate both first-time and experienced mothers.

5. A safety-focused approach to delivery

Physicians and staff involved in delivery here complete the J-CIMELS basic course on maternal emergency response, and take part in ongoing safety training. In an emergency, a mother may be transferred promptly to a partner higher-level institution for her safety.

6. Eligible for Tokyo's epidural childbirth subsidy programme (from May 23, 2025)

Patients receiving epidural childbirth here from October 1, 2025 onward are eligible. Please see the Tokyo Metropolitan Government website for application details and background on the benefits and risks of epidural birth.
